First Class Breast Star, in silver, center in silver gilt and enamels, maker marked "TANFANI - BERTARELI" on reverse, pin back with fine patina. Center slightly lose, but otherwise in very fine condition. Measures 86mm. The Pontifical Equestrian Order of St. Gregory the Great was established on September 1, 1831, by Pope Gregory XVI, seven months after his election. It is one of the five pontifical orders of knighthood in the Catholic Church. The order is bestowed on Catholic men and women (and in rare cases, non-Catholic men) in recognition of their service to the Church, unusual labors, support of the Holy See, and the good example set in their communities and country.

of St. Sylvester and Golden Spur, Type I (circa 1850-70), in silver gilt, consisting of alternating links, eight representing Order of St. Sylvester and nine representing the Order of the Golden Spur, approximate length 45 cm (18”), of fine quality make, unmarked, fire gilded with fine details, worn, about extremely fine condition and very rare.

Officer’s Cross in GOLD and enamels (French hallmark for 18Kt. Gold just above the cross), 40x64mm. Of superb quality manufacture, excellent quality translucent enamels on the cross and finely detailed center. Contained within exquisite custom made case, by French maker (case marked inside) “Halley, 143 Galerie de Valois, Palais-Royal”. Circa 1860-1870. Slight enamel flaking to green wreath, nearly extremely fine and very attractive. Rare by this maker and this quality.

This combined Order was established in 1841 by Pope Gregory XVI, in one class only. Cross, in GOLD and enamels, reduced size, 25mmx30mm. Marked on the ring by Vatican gold hallmark (maker’s mark unclear). Of fine quality make, one slight enamel flake one arm, about very fine condition and very scarce.

Breast star in silver, superimposed gold and enameled cross, 85mm. Circa 1860-80. Of superb quality make, exquisite details and fine quality enamels. Unmarked, though undoubtedly by Austrian maker Rothe. Enamels intact without chipping, two arms of the star re-enforced (seen from reverse only) otherwise in extremely fine condition. Very attractive and very scarce by this maker.

First Class cross in GOLD, 44x44mm, unmarked, mounted on fine quality original ribbon. Die struck cross of fine quality make, extremely fine. Contained within fitted “Tanfani & Bertarelli Roma” case of issue (case shows age, wear, fine condition). Older issue, late 1800’s.
