The King Haakon VII Freedom Cross

Cross in silver gilt and enamels, 41x47mm, marked J. Tostrup on reverse, original ribbon, extremely fine, in case of issue; with original English document “His Britannic Majesty’s unrestricted permission to wear the Decoration”, named to Temporary Acting Lieutenant-Commander Michael H.C. Peer-Groves, R.N.V.R., dated August 8, 1947. Award confirmed in London Gazette, 26 August 1947, listing Peer-Groves and another 37 Naval Officers who received this award for services rendered in Norway during the War, his citation as follows: “He expressed an exceptional understanding and helpfulness during the operation on the Norwegian coast from the beginning of the war until autumn of 1942. Furthermore, he showed real sympathy for the Norwegian Cause, and displayed through knowledge of the conditions in Norway.” Sold with research file indicating Peer-Groves “was assigned at the personal request of Admiral Sir Lionel Wells, Admiral Commanding Orkney and Shetlands, To be head of the intelligence section of the operation” carried on Shetlands, under code name “The Shetland Bus” , and purpose of the operation was to carry allied agents by sea to occupied Norway with badly needed small arms, explosives and other tactical materials.
