Stirling: Order of Merit, Grand Commander set of insignia, comprising: Neck Cross, in silver gilt and enamels, 53mmx53mm, on a full length of neck ribbon, enamels intact, unmarked, extremely fine; Star, in silver, silver gilt and enamels, 78mm, extremely fine; both contained within fitted case of issue; Order of Merit, Knight’s Cross, very fine (needs cleaning), with small decoration of the Grand Commander (20x21mm) attached to ribbon, this extremely fine and scarce; Austrian Empire: Military Merit Cross (2), one missing reverse cartouche; Bosnian Campaign Medal (on wrong ribbon); 1912-13 Campaign Cross; Troop Cross; Commemorative 1914-18 Austrian Medal; Hungarian Military merit Medal with Crown, gilded; Hungarian 1914-18 War Medal; Hungarian Long Service decoration; European Union Decoration (last one he received while living in Canada). Unless otherwise noted, medals mounted on original ribbons, and in generally very fine condition. Lot also include original photo of L. Stirling; and his solid silver Austrian made (hallmarked) cigarette case, with his family Coat of Arms engraved on it. (This lot bought directly from a daughter of Mr. S. Stirling). Originally from Scotland (town of Stirling), descendants of L. Stirling emigrated to Austria two Centuries ago, eventually settling on Budapest, Hungary. L. Stirling as on Officer served in Austro-Hungarian Army during WWI, Eastern Front, ended up as POW in Russian captivity, and eventually through Japan returned to Hungary. Served in Hungarian Army 1920-1944, then moved to Germany with Family (together with Lieutenant First Class Z.K), then to Austria, eventually to Dominican Republic in 1949; then to Canada in mid 1950’s. He was accompanied with his daughter and his Son-in-law, Z.K. (This lot will be sold together with lot H174, $3500).
