(11055 Sapr., R.E.; Khedive’s Star 1884-6, unnamed, edge bruising, contact marks, nearly very fine. William Barnecutt was born in Gillingham, Kent. A Collar Maker by occupation, he attested for the Royal Engineers at Devonport on 8 May 1871, aged 21 years. With the R.E. he served in Natal, April 1879-January 1880, and in Egypt, February-July 1885. Suffering an accident causing injuries to his head and abdomen at Brokenhurst Camp on 13 June 1890, he was discharged the service at Aldershot on 7 May 1892. Sold with copied service papers and roll extracts.

Royal Artillery, officer commanding 9th Battery 2nd Brigade R.A. in the Perak Expedition 1875-76: Crimea 1854-56, 1 clasp, Sebastopol, unnamed as issued; India General Service 1854-95, 1 clasp, Perak (Major O. H. A. Nicolls, 9th By. 2nd Bde. R. A.); Turkish Crimea, Sardinian issue, unnamed, edge bruising and lacquered, otherwise very fine. Oliver Henry Atkins Nicolls was born at Bognor, Sussex, on 24 July 1834. He was appointed a Gentleman Cadet, Royal Artillery, in December 1849, and gazetted a Second Lieutenant R.A. on 12 December 1853. Posted to 1 Company 9th Battalion, Siege Train R.A. in the Crimea, he arrived there in September 1854 and was engaged in the First Bombardment of Sebastopol until invalided. He rejoined the regiment in the Crimea in September 1855 and took part in the Sixth Bombardment of Sebastopol. He became 2nd Captain in April 1860 and was appointed A.D.C. to the G.O.C. Ceylon. Promoted to Captain in December 1869, he was posted to Penang and Singapore in June 1872 and advanced to Major the following month. Major Nicolls commanded 9th Battery 2nd Brigade R.A. on the expedition to Perak 1875-76 and received the brevet of Lieutenant-Colonel in July 1876. Nicolls was confirmed in the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in August 1879 and became brevet Colonel in July 1881. Promoted to Major-General in August 1890, he became Colonel Commandant, Royal Artillery, in November 1894, and retired in July 1896. Major-General Nicolls died at Chichester on 15 October 1920.

who was carried to safety by Private Edward Durrant after being wounded at Bergendal in August 1900 - which feat of bravery won the latter a Victoria Cross: Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, 4 clasps, Defence of Ladysmith, Laing’s Nek, Belfast, Cape Colony (8599 Cpl., Rifle Brigade); King’s South Africa 1901-02, 2 clasps, South Africa 1901, South Africa 1902 (8599 Corpl., Rifle Brigade); Army L.S. & G.C., E.VII.R. (8599 Pte., Rifle Bde.), number officially corrected on the second, minor contact wear, generally very fine or better; The citation for Edward Durrant’s V.C., which was published in the London Gazette on 18 October 1901, states: ‘At Bergendal, on 27 August 1900, Acting Corporal Wellar (sic), having been wounded and being somewhat dazed, got up from his prone position in the firing line, exposing himself still more to the enemy’s fire, and commenced to run towards them. Private Durrant rose, and, pulling him down, endeavoured to keep him quiet; but finding this impossible, he took him up and carried him back 200 yards under a heavy fire to shelter, returning immediately to his place in the line.’ Assuming Weller was discharged prior to the Great War, it is worth noting that 5013 Rifleman Sydney Weller, 3rd Battalion, Rifle Brigade - who was born in Mickleham, Surrey and a resident of Bletchworth Hill on his enlistment - was killed in action on 22 September 1914.

1914-15 Star (124367 A.B.,R.N.); British War and Victory Medals (124367 A.B.R.N.); Royal Fleet Reserve LS & GC Medal (124367 PO. B.356 A.B., R.F.R.). Very fine. Alfred Mitchell was H.M.S. Victoria survivor. HMS Victoria was one of two Victoria-class battleships of the Royal Navy. On 22 June 1893 she collided with HMS Camperdown near Tripoli, Lebanon during manoeuvres and quickly sank, taking 358 crew with her, including the commander of the British Mediterranean Fleet, Vice-Admiral Sir George Tryon. One of the survivors was second-in-command, John Jellicoe, later commander-in-chief of the British Grand Fleet at the Battle of Jutland. Sold with copies of service records.

Army Medical Service and 12th Foot. CRIMEA 1854-56, 1 clasp, Sebastopol (Staff. Asst. Surgn.) contemporary engraved naming; NEW ZEALAND 1845-1866, reverse undated (Asst. Sur., 12th Foot); TURKISH CRIMEA 1855 SARDINIAN ISSUE (Staff Asst. Surgn.) contemporary engraved naming, fitted with the British Crimea Medal suspension. Good very fine. Arthur Henry Francis Lynch was born in Edinburgh on 13 August 1830. During his lifetime he gained the L.K.Q.C.P. Ireland and L.M. 1867; L.R.C.S.I. 1852; L.M. Coombe Hospital, Dublin 1853 and became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Van Diemen’s Land. He was appointed Acting Assistant Surgeon on 14 December 1854 and Assistant Surgeon with the 7th Dragoons on 9 February 1855. In December 1855 he was appointed Staff Assistant Surgeon but was transferred to the reserve in August 1856. Two years later he was reappointed Staff Assistant Surgeon and on 28 January 1859 was transferred to the 12th Foot. With that regiment he served in New Zealand, 1860-61. Appointed Staff Assistant Surgeon on 22 December 1863, he retired on Half Pay on 25 November 1864 and died at Fulham on 28 November 1888. Sold with copied research. He is several times mentioned in ‘Ensign Hamilton’s Letter’, which appeared in the Military Historical Society of Australia Journal, April/June 1983. The letter from a young ensign to his father, dated 14 February 1859, reports on his voyage to India.

Queen’s South Africa Medal, clasps: Cape Colony; Orange Free State, engraved (Lieut. J. Fairfax Rhodes, Rl. Scots Greys); King’s South Africa Medal, clasps: South Africa 1901; South Africa 1902, engraved (Lt. J.F. Rhodes, 2/Dgns.). Generally very fine, contained within contemporary fitted red leather case (slightly scuffed, good fine). QSA medals is missing “Belfast” clasp. Lieut. John Fairfax Rhodes, 2nd Dragoons (Scots Greys), was killed in action at Klippan, near Springs, February 18th 1902. The only son of Fairfax Rhodes, Esq., of Brockhampton Park, Gloucestershire, and 29 Prince’s Gardens, S.W., he was born in December 1877 and educated at Eton (Miss Evans’). He entered the 2nd Dragoons in June 1899 being promoted Lieut. September 1900. He accompanied his regiment to South Africa in October 1899, and served throughout the war in the operations in the north of Cape Colony, the relief of Kimberley, and the advance on Bloemfontein and Pretoria. He subsequently served in the Transvaal. In the action in which Lieut. Rhodes was killed; his squadron was suddenly attacked by the Boers and lost three officers. The remains of Lieut. Rhodes, accompanied by an escort of a sergeant and eight men of his regiment, were brought home and buried at Charlton Abbott’s near Cheltenham.

13th Royal Regiment (Canadian Militia). Colonial Auxiliary Forces Officers’ Decoration, G.V.R., rev. impressed, ‘Lt-Col. R. A. Robertson, 13th Regt.’, hallmarks for Birmingham 1913, complete with brooch bar; Colonial Auxiliary Forces Long Service, G.V.R. (Lt-Colonel, 13th Royal Regt.), impressed naming, nearly extremely fine. Robert Alexander Robertson was born in Hamilton, Ontario, on 16 May 1869. He joined the 13th Royal Regiment (Canadian Militia) as a 2nd Lieutenant on 30 June 1896. Robertson was a crack shot, obtaining the highest score during the 5th Imperial Rifle Match; he also represented Canada as a member of the Bisley team for 1899 and was a member of the team firing for the Palma Trophy in 1901. He was promoted to Lieutenant in September 1898, Captain in September 1903 and Major in July 1915. During the war he served in the Mobilisation Depot for Hamilton, being appointed to the Saff of the C.E.F. and given the task of Recruiting Officer for the Hamilton District, being made a Tempoary Lieutenant-Colonel, November 1915-December 1918. He attained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in December 1918 and in May 1919 was given command of the 13th Regiment. Lieutenant-Colonel Robertson retired in 1928 and died two years later. Sold with newspaper cuttings relating to the recipient, together with copied service papers and other research.
