A. 4526) C.P.O. R.F.R.); generally very fine. CPO Samuel Williamson served from 1914 to 1929 with most of his service being on Submarines. During the Great War he served on L15, L21, G8, K2, & C23. Documents with the medals are logs from ships he was serving on giving details of actions he would have been involved in. Also a list of ships and postings and confirmation of his LS medal. He enlisted in the Chatham Div of the RN on 2 Dec 1906 and retired 1 Feb 1929. Sold with copies of Service Records.

Colonel George Campbell, Royal Marine Artillery: 1914-15 Star (Lieut., R.M.); British War and Victory Medals (Lieut.); Defence Medal; 1939-45 War medal; 1937 Coronation Medal, privately engraved (Maj., R.M.), very fine or better. From 11 Jul 1915 to 1 Dec 1915 he was posted to the Royal Marine Artillery Division for officer training and the Brigadier General in charge indicated that he “has done well so far while under instruction and in my opinion should make a good officer with more experience.” He served with the R.M.A. Anti-Aircraft Brigade at Dunkirk, Petit Pont and Dranoutre from 2 Dec 1915 to 18 May 1917 and was then posted to the R.M.A. Division from 19 May 1917 to 22 Jun 1917. From 23 Jun 1917 to 27 Jul 1918 Campbell served with the R.M.A. Heavy Siege Train in Flanders and his commanding officer indicated that he was “a hardworking and promising officer.” He was transferred to the Permanent List of Officers on 1 Dec 1917. From 28 Jul 1918 to 25 Jul 1919 he served on HMS Conqueror, where his commanding officer indicated that he was “a good officer, keen and energetic; had two years experience with heavy batteries in France.” Campbell passed the Gunnery Course on 9 May 1919 and was then posted to the 7th Royal Marine Battalion, from 26 Jul 1919 to 1 Sep 1919 and his efficiency report indicated that “his command and tactics very good; very efficient and capable of training a platoon.” He served on HMS Conqueror from 2 Sep 1919 to 31 March 1920 and Captain Segrave, R.N. wrote “a worthy, young officer of no special attainments except as regards fire control of which he has a thorough knowledge. Good command of men.” He was posted to the R.M.A. Division from 1 Apr 1920 to 1 Jun 1920 and then joined the 8th Royal Marine Battalion, Special Service in Ireland and H.B.L., Portsmouth, from 2 Jun 1920 to 17 Sep 1920. The Officer Commanding, Lt. Col. Morgan, wrote that he was “a smart and capable officer who carried out his duties as Detachment Commander very efficiently.” He served with the R.M.A. Division from 18 Sep 1920 to 30 Sep 1920 and was attached to Royal Marine Depot for an Equitation Course from 1 Oct 1920 to 24 Mar 1921. From 25 Mar 1921 to 10 Oct 1921 he served in the R.M.A. Division. Lt. Col. R.O. Paterson, Officer Commanding, 9th R.M. Battalion indicated that he “is a capable and reliable subaltern officer. His manner with N.C.O.s and men is good. Rather inclined to take a situation as he finds it, than attempt to better it. More personal responsibility would bring out this officer’s best qualities.” Colonel Commandant Conway-Gordon described him as “a reliable officer and is a trier – not good at games, but enjoys hunting and shooting.” He was posted to HMS Ramillies in the Atlantic Fleet, from 11 Oct 1921 to 12 May 1922 and Capt. Raikes of the Royal Navy wrote that he is “a keen and energetic officer. Physically robust and fit. Mentally normal but sometimes a little slow. Tempermentally rather slow and solid. Is ready to take responsibility.” From 13 May 1922 to 15 Jan 1923 he served with the R.M.A. Division gaining a 1st Class Certificate from the Institute of Musketry, Hythe in Oct 1922 and passing the Anti-Gas Course, 12 Jan 1923. He served with the 11th Royal Marine Battalion in Turkey and the Eastern Mediterranean, from 16 Jan 1923 to 7 Sep 1923 and with the Portsmouth Division from 8 Sep 1923 to 21 May 1925. From 22 May 1924 to 26 Nov 1927 he was posted aboard HMS Valiant and passed the Land Artillery Course on 19 Aug 1924; passed the Machine Gun Course on 17 Oct 1924 and passed the Battery Commander’s Course at Shoeburyness on 14 Mar 1925. On 23 Nov 1927 he was commended by the Commander-in-Chief, Mediterranean for his Intelligence Report on Rhodes and served with the Portsmouth Division from 27 Nov 1927 to 10 Oct 1929 where he passed the Gunnery Staff Course (including mobile) (School of Artillery portion on 28 Sep 1929.) He was aboard HMS Rodney in the Atlantic from 11 Oct 1929 to 4 Sep 1931 and then joined the Portsmouth Division from 5 Sep 1931 to 6 May 1935, passing the Royal Artillery Mechanical Tractor Course at the Military College of Science at Woolwich on 18 Dec 1931 and a certificate of the Gunnery Staff Course (Anti-Aircraft Branch). From 7 May 1935 until 30 May 1935 he was posted to HMS Iron Duke for special service as an Associate Member, Mechanical Warfare Board and served with the Portsmouth Division from 31 May 1935 to 16 Sep 1935. Campbell served on HMS President IV in the Mediterranean from 17 Sep 1935 to 9 Aug1936 and then was posted to Portsmouth Division from 10 Aug 1939 to 1 Nov 1936. He was aboard HMS Orion in Home Waters from 2 Nov 1936 to 1 Nov 1936 and on HMS Southampton from 8 Apr 1937 to 16 Dec 1938. In Dec 1937 he attended the Senior Officer`s Course and was then assigned to Portsmouth Division on 17 Dec 1938 where he served as Drafting Officer, Portsmouth, from 2 Oct 1939 to 7 Dec 1941. He served with Plymouth Division from 8 Dec 1941 to 9 May 1942 and from 10 May 1942 to 23 Mar 1943 he was a Lieutenant Colonel and Commanding Officer, Reinforcement Depot of MNBDO 1 and Officer Commanding, Troops, Hayling Sector. From 24 Mar 1943 to 7 Jun 1945 he was Commanding Officer, Royal Marine Training Group at Towyn where his adjutant described him as a “very pleasant, even-tempered and tolerant officer whose wisdom and technical knowledge was unobtrusively sound”. Campbell was Paymaster, Chatham, from 8 Jun 1945 to 11 Jun 1950 where he was described as “a most likeable and sincere man to all those with whom he came in contact.” “It appeared to be his habit to stroll along from his Married Quarter in Teapot Row to the Mess every evening and order his pre-supper tot of whiskey. With this in hand he would sit and chat to anyone who happened to be there. ``If anyone ever enjoyed his tot of whiskey, it was George.” He retired to Hayling Island in 1950 and died there on 14 Mar 1984 aged 88 years. John McKenna was born in Sligo and enlisted in the 1st Regiment in Glasgow in Sep 1857, aged 17 years. In his subsequent career of 21 years with the Colours he served for 12 years in the East Indies and for 19 months in China, where he qualified for the above described Medal and clasps. McKenna, who was finally discharged in Mar 1879 in consequence of having been found ‘unfit for further service’, did not qualify for the L.S. & G.C. Medal, having several times been entered in the regimental defaulter’s book. Sold with copies of service records. |

Major General A.R.V. Crease Indian Mutiny Medal, clasp: Central India, impressed (Capt. A.R.V. Crease, Royal Engrs); Turkish Crimean Medal, Sardinian issue, contemporary privately engraved (Major A.R.V. Crease, T.C. Engineers), good very fine. Anthony Reynolds Vyvyan Crease, native of southwestern Ontario, joined the Royal Engineers as Second Lieutenant in May 1846. He served in the Crimea during the winter of 1855-56 under Sir R.H. Vivian; was second in command of the Engineer Force with the Turkish Contingent with the local rank of Major, and commanded the Engineers during the latter four months of the occupation of Kertch by the Allies (Turkish Medal). He served with the Central India Field Force under Sir Hugh Rose; was Field Engineer and commanded the 21st Company Royal Engineers during the summer of 1858, and was present at the battles of Autsee and Gwalior and capture of Gwalior (medal with clasp). He was latterly Commanding Royal Engineer, Cape of Good Hope, Natal and retired as Major-General in Jul 1885. He died at St. Leonards’s-on-Sea on 9 Oct 1892. |

John McCormick was born in the Parish of Bunblin, near Roscommon, and enlisted into the 6th Foot at Dublin on 17 Jul 1811. He was discharged on 11 May 1812, in consequence of “chronic affection of the liver”. Sold with copy discharge papers and a muster roll for Jun to Sep 1814 which lists McCormick as being in the regimental hospital whilst stationed in Upper Canada. The Regiment arrived in Jul 1814 and took part in the action at Fort Erie. |

One clasp, “Orthes”, impressed (John Mellilew, 6th Foot), one edge bump otherwise extremely fine. Born in the Parish of Middleton, near the town of Middleton, County of Lancaster. Enlisted for HM6th Foot at Rochdale, County of Lancaster on 7 Dec 1810, at the age of 18 years for unlimited service. Served in the Army for nineteen years and two hundred and nineteen days. Period of Service: From 7 Dec 1810 to 13 Jul 1830. Served in the East Indies from 31 May 1825 to 8 May 1830. By the authority of His Excellency the Commander in Chief, he was discharged in consequence of nearly total lack of vision of both eyes from a long and severe attack of opthalmia. Description: Thirty seven years of age, five feet seven and one quarter inches tall, brown hair, brown eyes, fresh complexion. Occupation weaver. Age 37 yrs 8 months. Served 19 yrs 7 months. India 4 years 11 months. Nearly total loss of vision of both eyes from a long and severe attack of opthalmia. Improved very much by [?] he has now useful vision and can see to guide himself though the eyes are still muddy.
